Subtitling a video in the same language as the one being spoken is already a difficult task as the spoken word is much faster to process than the written word. As such, speech must be condensed into as few characters as possible to enable the viewers to read in conjunction with the action and words on the screen.
This task becomes all the more difficult when you have to translate the words being spoken. Anyone who has tried to carry this task out (I did once… never again!) will know that saying it is ‘difficult’ is a huge understatement, especially when you consider the cultural differences which must be taken into account/ adapted and the fact that subtitles shouldn’t stay on screen between scenes, making the time available for the subtitles to appear on screen even shorter.
This is why we have targeted freelance subtitlers who double up as translators – if they have good language skills, are efficient and technically savvy, then they are a rare breed indeed!
Should you need any videos subtitled or translated and subtitled, please contact us with as much information as possible about your project and we will get back to you with a quote within 24 hours.
